Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp (soft tissue inside your teeth containing blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue) becomes inflamed or diseased. This may be due to a deep cavity or a cracked or broken tooth. Patient usually experiences a spontaneous or throbbing pain which may increase when lying down.

During root canal treatment, the diseased pulp is first removed. The pulp chamber and root canal(s) of the tooth are cleaned, and then filled with an inert material and sealed. If the infected pulp is not removed, pain and swelling can result, and your tooth may have to be removed.

Following a root canal treatment, the tooth is fragile due to structural loss from decay and is prone to fracture. Over time color changes are also observed. To protect the tooth from fracture your dentist will advise a crown. Sometimes depending upon the amount of tooth structure that is lost, a post (a metal or a glass fiber pin ) will need to be placed for added retention of the crown. if you continue to care for your teeth and gums your restored tooth could last a lifetime. However, regular checkups are necessary; a tooth without its nerve can still develop cavities or gum disease. Most of the time, a root canal is a relativelysimple procedure with little or no discomfort involving one to three visits. Best of all, it can save your tooth and your smile.
